The mill in winter, light and silence

From November to March the Gard takes on a low, raking light and skies washed clean by the mistral. In the stone tower the evenings stretch out in peace, and the Pont du Gard, five minutes away, can be visited without the summer crowds.

A winter light washed clean by the mistral

Winter here is mild and bright. When the mistral gets up it sweeps the clouds away and leaves a sky of the purest blue, where every cypress and umbrella pine stands out sharply. The garrigue falls silent; the cicadas are gone, and all you hear is the wind in the olive trees and, sometimes, footsteps on the path. Evening comes early. Beneath the whitewashed vaults of the tower, the last light of the afternoon slides across the stone, then night settles in, silent. From the terrace, the Pont du Gard can be made out in a landscape restored to itself, free of the summer crowds.

Your days, from the Pont du Gard to the truffles of Uzès

The Pont du Gard, five minutes away, can be explored without the crowds: the arches, the museum and the banks of the Gardon almost to yourselves. In the garrigue and the Gardon gorges, the paths smell of thyme and rosemary. It is also the season of the new olive oil, to be tasted on bread. In January, Uzès holds its truffle market; every Saturday its big market fills the Place aux Herbes. On grey days, the Palais des Papes in Avignon and the Roman arena in Nîmes are twenty-five minutes away. In Domazan, the cellar of Château de Bosc awaits you for a tasting.
